FILM PRODUCTION

Founded in 2015 as genre film production company Dark Rift Films by Paul Butler & Stewart Sparke, THE CREATURE BELOW was the studio's debut feature film and premiered at FRIGHTFEST London in 2016. Self financed by Paul & Stewart with a budget of only £12,000 and shot over just fourteen days, the film proved critically and commercially successful. The film is currently available in over ten territories on DVD, Blu-ray and digital.

BOOK OF MONSTERS was the studio’s second feature and began life as a Kickstarter campaign with a unique twist – backers could to vote on six key elements of the movie including what form the monsters would take and how they killed their victims. The Kickstarter campaign became one of the 15 most funded horror movies on the crowdfunding platform at the time. The film had its World Premiere at FRIGHTFEST London 2018 and picked up 7 awards, including “Best Film” and “Best Special FX” at the New York City Horror Film Festival. Book of Monsters is now available on Blu-ray and streaming platforms around the world.

Following the critical & commercial success of its first two features, Dark Rift Films rebranded as Dark Rift Horror in 2021 to reflect the multi-media scope of the studio’s future projects. HOW TO KILL MONSTERS marks this exciting new direction for the studio with a multi-media project that includes a feature film, video game and comic book. How to Kill Monsters has won twenty one awards at international film festivals including five for “Best Film” and is available on Blu-ray and streaming platforms around the world.

In 2025, Dark Rift Horror partnered with the award-winning video game publisher Wales Interactive to develop DEAD RESET, an interactive sci-fi horror movie available on PC, PS5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. This venture into the gaming space highlights the studio’s unique ability to translate high-concept horror into diverse formats without losing the handcrafted aesthetic that fans have come to expect.

Whether through the lens of a camera, the pages of a comic, or the mechanics of a game, Dark Rift Horror continues to push the boundaries of independent genre filmmaking. With a growing slate of original IP in development, the studio remains dedicated to its grassroots origins, prioritizing practical monster effects and fan-centric storytelling across every medium.

BLU-RAY DISTRIBUTION

Recognising the extraordinary demand among the UK horror fanbase for premium Blu-ray releases in an industry oversaturated by streaming platforms, the studio launched its own Blu-ray label in 2020, debuting with the release of BOOK OF MONSTERS on Blu-ray.

Limited to 300 copies and presented in a hand-numbered Slipcover, the Collector’s Edition release sold out during the pre-order window and demonstrated the demand for high quality physical media among the horror community. 

The studio has since released BOOK OF MONSTERS, I AM MONSTERS! and HOW TO KILL MONSTERS as Collector’s Edition Blu-ray releases under the Dark Rift Horror label, all of which are available directly from the Dark Rift Horror Shop.
